The Game

Gloomsday key art — Gary and Mora outside Colwell Academy

Dark roguelite action-platformer  ·  Early Access on Steam

Short description

Gloomsday is a dark roguelite action-platformer. Thief-turned-mage Gary entered Colwell Academy looking for loot. Now he must fight to escape. Draw mana from your surroundings to cast spells—keep moving or you’ll run out. To be still is to die, but in Colwell Academy, death is only the beginning.

About

There is no mana bar in Gloomsday. Mana hangs in the air, and casting drains it from the space around you — drain your corner dry and your spells dry too, so movement is survival. Enemies draw from the same field, which makes every fight a fight over ground. Runs are built from fourteen spells, each with an active cast and a passive enchantment half, layered with glyphs and pacts into a different wizard every time: glass cannon, tanky summoner, invisible assassin. Back in the Grand Hall the movement upgrades you buy persist, turning Gary’s meager thief skills into real mobility one death at a time. The story unfolds alongside Mora and Hat, a talking hat, as the halls of Colwell Academy rearrange themselves run after run, and the things living in them begin to remember Gary’s name.

Features

  • Mana lives in the air — no mana bar. Spells charge from your surroundings; hold still and you run dry. Keep moving.
  • Enemies cast from the same field, so every fight is also a fight over ground.
  • Fourteen spells, each with an active cast and a passive enchantment half.
  • Glyphs and pacts reshape your build every run.
  • Movement feeds casting: repositioning keeps mana flowing, and a double jump refunds spell charge.
  • The Grand Hall hub, where the movement upgrades you buy persist from one run to the next.
  • Tight 2D pixel-art platforming through the ever-shifting halls of Colwell Academy.
  • Dialogue that progresses with your wins and losses. The bosses remember you.
  • An original score written for the game.
  • Dark fantasy delivered with a dry sense of humor.
  • Full controller support, plus keyboard and mouse.
  • Free demo: the practice arena — try every spell against the basic enemies.

Videos

A gameplay trailer is coming. Until it lands here, the fastest way to see Gloomsday in motion is the free practice-arena demo on Steam, and development videos are posted to the studio’s YouTube channel.

Cutting your own video and need the raw file rather than an embed? Email contact@teamnabla.com and we’ll send it.

Music

Gloomsday has a fully original score, composed for the game by Dillan Schmitz. It isn’t available for download — you can hear it in the game and in the demo. Reviewers who want to talk to the composer, or need a track cleared for a specific piece of coverage, should email contact@teamnabla.com.

Gameplay footage that includes the score is covered by the streaming permission below. Standalone soundtrack uploads are not.

Fourteen gameplay captures, each 1440×811. Click any image for the full-resolution PNG, or take everything at once with the asset zip.

Logos & Key Art

Click to download individual files, or grab the asset zip for all of them (SVGs included).

Usage: please don’t recolor, rotate, stretch, or add effects to the marks, and leave clear space around them equal to the height of the ∇ glyph. Cropping key art to fit a layout is fine.

Review Keys

Ask and you’ll get one. Email contact@teamnabla.com with your outlet or channel and a link to something you’ve published. We aim to reply within two business days.

Keys go to journalists, streamers, and video creators alike — we don’t gate on audience size. If you’d rather just try it first, the practice arena demo is free and needs no key at all.

History

Team Nabla is a two-person independent studio from Wisconsin, USA: a game director and a narrative director, working with a contract art director and a contract audio director and composer. Every detail gets the same obsessive attention: the mana system, a line of dialog, a single idle animation.

Gloomsday, the studio’s debut, launched in Early Access on Steam as a prototype on January 1, 2024 and relaunched as a full Early Access game in July 2026, alongside a free demo and a community Discord. Content updates have shipped every two to four weeks since, growing toward a planned Fall 2027 full release. In February 2026 the studio formalized as Team Nabla LLC, led by Game Director Nathaniel Strauss and Narrative Director Brandon Hagans.

Team

Video & Streaming Permission

Yes. Team Nabla LLC grants permission to capture, stream, and publish gameplay footage and screenshots of Gloomsday — and to monetize that content on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. No prior approval needed, for any current or future build of the game. This doesn’t extend to uploading the soundtrack on its own or redistributing raw game assets. Questions: contact@teamnabla.com.

Boilerplate

Team Nabla is a two-person independent game studio based in Wisconsin, USA, led by Game Director Nathaniel Strauss and Narrative Director Brandon Hagans. Its debut title, Gloomsday, is a dark roguelite action-platformer where mana lives in the air: spells charge from the space around you, so standing still is what kills you. It is in Early Access on Steam with a free demo, and a full release is planned for Fall 2027. In Colwell Academy, death is only the beginning.
